A statement on surveillance capitalism, algorithmic capture, and why sovereign platforms are being built.

You used to go online. Now you are mined.
Antes te conectabas a internet. Ahora te extraen.
Not metaphorically. Literally: your attention harvested, your behavior logged, your predictions sold before you have finished the thought that generated them.
No metafóricamente. Literalmente: tu atención cosechada, tu comportamiento registrado, tus predicciones vendidas antes de que termines de pensar el pensamiento que las generó.
This did not happen to the internet. It happened to you, through the internet, by design.

The platform is not the town square.
La plataforma no es la plaza pública.
The platform is the till.

For twenty years the pitch was democratization — free tools, free speech, free connection. What the pitch never disclosed was the mechanism by which “free” pays for itself. You did not pay with money. You paid with the one asset more valuable than money: your undivided attention, extracted continuously, refined into prediction, and sold.
Durante veinte años el discurso fue la democratización — herramientas gratuitas, libertad de expresión, conexión libre. Serious critics of the platform economy have a name for this: surveillance capitalism — a system in which human experience itself becomes the raw material extracted for behavioral prediction, and prediction becomes the product.

The algorithm was never neutral.

An algorithm optimized for engagement will find, with mechanical reliability, that outrage, fear, and status anxiety outperform curiosity, patience, and depth. It is not malfunctioning when it does this. It is functioning exactly as instructed.

Call it algorithmic capture: a feedback loop in which the system studies you closely enough to predict what will hold you, and what holds you is rarely what serves you.

What “free” actually cost.

Not your data alone. Your capacity for sustained attention. Your tolerance for ideas that take longer than a scroll to land. Your willingness to sit with something before reacting to it. The old internet did not just take information from you — it retrained the instrument you think with.
No solo tus datos. Tu capacidad de atención sostenida. Tu tolerancia a las ideas que tardan más que un scroll en asentarse. Tu disposición a sentarte con algo antes de reaccionar a ello. El viejo internet no solo te quitó información — reentrenó el instrumento con el que piensas.
Twenty years in, the retraining is visible in the aggregate: shortened attention spans, declining trust, a public conversation optimized for velocity over accuracy. None of this was inevitable. It was the predictable output of a specific incentive structure.

The correction is not a better feed.

A platform that shows you slightly less enraging content, curated by a slightly kinder algorithm, is still a surveillance platform. Optimizing the extraction does not end it.
Una plataforma que te muestra contenido ligeramente menos indignante, curado por un algoritmo ligeramente más amable, sigue siendo una plataforma de vigilancia. Optimizar la extracción no la termina.
What ends it is removing the incentive at the root: no ad-based business model, no behavioral data sold to third parties, no engagement metric standing between the reader and the work.

This is why sovereign platforms are being built.

Not “sovereign” as branding. Sovereign in the specific sense that matters: subscriber-funded rather than advertiser-funded, so the business model does not require attention to be harvested and sold. Membership rather than open feed, so the incentive is depth for people who stay, not reach for people who scroll past. Small enough to be governed by judgment rather than by an algorithm optimizing at a scale no one can supervise.
No “soberana” como marca. Soberana en el sentido específico que importa: financiada por suscriptores y no por anunciantes, de modo que el modelo de negocio no requiera que la atención sea cosechada y vendida. Membresía en lugar de feed abierto, de modo que el incentivo sea la profundidad para quienes se quedan, no el alcance para quienes pasan de largo. This is not a finished architecture. It is a correction in progress — an attempt to rebuild, deliberately and slowly, the kind of room the old internet made structurally impossible: one funded by the people in it, accountable to the people in it, and answerable to nothing else.

You felt it before you could name it.

The scroll that leaves you more anxious than informed. The feed that seems to know you better than it serves you. The quiet suspicion that you were never the customer.

Now you have a name for it: the old internet is dead. What replaces it is still being built — deliberately, slowly, by people who would rather help build a smaller room built for a purpose than inherit a limitless one built for extraction.
