The United States is experiencing a double unraveling. Its epistemic web is losing coherence (shared facts, shared meanings, shared reality), and its institutional fabric is losing capacity (norms degraded, expertise devalued, alliances fractured). These are not independent phenomena. When institutions fail, uncertainty rises; when uncertainty rises, people cling to identity-based belief webs rather than empirically-adjusted ones; when belief webs detach from empirical constraint, they support leaders who further degrade institutions. The loop is self-reinforcing.
